More Church Burglaries in Chillicothe
CHILLICOTHE (James Jackson/Kate Liebers) -- Chillicothe police have reported an increase in church break-ins.
Since ABC 6/FOX 28 reported about thieves targeting churches last week, investigators reported nine more churches have been burglarized.
At First Church of God, the hinge on the secretary's office door still shows the damage from a recent burglary.
Senior Pastor Matthew Roe said the crooks took $147 from a money bag.
"The funds that were taken were funds that were going to be used to meet the needs of the community in which we are located," Roe said. "So that was a little frustrating."
The Chillicothe Police Department said, of the nine churches that have since been burglarized, two were targeted twice.
Ross County Sheriff's deputies also reported some break-ins.
Police have urged church leaders to keep money and valuables out of the buildings and have someone watch the facilities.
"Have a security team," Chillicothe Police spokesman Officer Bud Lytle said. "Have someone in place that when we have these events have one individual designated to walk around that might look for suspicious people."
Roe took the advice to heart. Now, someone is watching the property at all times and all valuables have been taken out of the church.
"When there's money that comes in, we make sure that it's secure and taken to the bank as soon as possible," Roe said.
Chillicothe police have no suspects. They believe the criminal was familiar with the churches, possibly from attending a charity drive or other public event.
