Columbus Police Arrest School Bus Driver for On-Duty OVI

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- Columbus City Schools officials will soon decide if they will fire a bus driver allegedly caught driving drunk with kids on-board the vehicle.

Police arrested Tia Denton on Monday at approximately 5:30 p.m. after stopping the bus in South Columbus. A district supervisor asked officers to look for Denton's bus when a GPS device indicated that the vehicle was off its route.

Police stopped the bus at Parsons Avenue and Leach Drive, and found Dia and two students on-board, along with an open container of alcohol, according to investigators. Witnesses told police Dia was driving erratically before she was stopped.

Denton, 51, faces charges of OVI, child endangering, and driving with an open container. She has worked for Columbus City Schools (CCS) for less than one year.

District officials will soon hold a hearing to determine the future of Denton's employment with CCS. She has been barred from district property while she awaits that meeting.

Authorities have not set a court date regarding Denton's criminal charges.
