Katrina Rescue Dog Finds Forever Home
COLUMBUS (Terri Sullivan) - From a hurricane to new home, a dog rescued eight years ago finally has a family.
Trina was one of several dogs rescued by a local group after Hurricane Katrina, the storm for which she is named.
While the other dogs found new homes, Trina has spent the past eight years in a kennel home.
That changed after ABC 6 aired a story about this 9-year-old German Shepherd mix in October.
Trina captured the hearts of hundreds, including John and Meghan Kizer. After seeing the story online, they said they knew they wanted to be Trina's forever home.
"I was pretty much sold as soon as we met her," John said.
After years in a kennel, she is slowly rebuilding her strength. Now frequent walks and rolls in the leaves are part of Trina's day.
She even sports a bit of bling on her collar.
"She's already more than a little bit spoiled," John said.
The dog who hadn't barked in eight years has finally found her voice.
"The second or third day we had her, there was a squirrel running around on the back deck," John said. "She saw it through the back window and let out this deep Germans Shepherd's bark."
The barks are few and far between.
The Kizers, who lost a dog a few months ago, welcome the companionship.
"She's got her own unique personality," Meghan said. "And it's fun to get to know another one all over again."
Trina, who lost her own family in the storm, seems to feel the same way.
