Residents Clean Up After Tornado Rips Mobile Home Community
Mike McCarthy/Kate Liebers) The families living in the path of a tornado expected to get a scare this Halloween, but not like this.
They said the fear they felt when homes were blown apart and moved off their foundations was unlike anything they had ever experienced.
Its crazy, said Rosemary Zwiebel, whose home was damaged in the storm. I was like, Whoa. What happened here?
The tornado invaded the Shanendoah Commons mobile park Thursday night. Three homes were destroyed and dozens more severely damaged.
The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado had been on the ground for about a quarter mile, tearing off the roofs of structures in its wake.
Donna Morrison, another resident of the commons, said siding and shingles became shrapnel, punching holes everywhere in sight.
I was devastated, Morrison said. I seen pieces of peoples roofs. Im lucky. Im one of the lucky ones.
Terry and Theresa Agin, on the other hand, woke up to their home being destroyed. Terry said something big enough to blast a hole through the side of their bedroom came flying in right above their heads. A glass from a window shot into Terrys leg.
Nobody got hurt except for me, he said. Leave it to me to take the lead, huh?
Were lucky, his wife said. It could have been a lot worse. You know, were very thankful we didnt get killed.
