Bail Set for Man Accused of Robbing, Dragging Elderly Woman in Worthington

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- A man accused of dragging an elderly woman from a stolen van after stealing her purse appeared in court Monday morning.

A Franklin County judge set a $250,000 bail amount for Wesley Rees, who was arrested at a Columbus motel several hours after allegedly dragging the 82-year-old victim in the parking lot of Kroger at Worthington Square on December 13.

Security footage captured in the parking lot shows the suspect -- identified by police as Rees --grabbing the victim's purse, leading the woman to follow him to the stolen van and take hold of the vehicle's driver's side door handle.

The woman was dragged a short distance before she let go of the handle. She was transported to a Columbus hospital after the incident occurred, where she was treated for minor injuries.

Investigators believe the van was stolen while it was warming up outside the home of its owner.

SWAT officers arrested Rees at Red Carpet Inn on E. Dublin Granville Road during the early morning hours of December 14 after he was allegedly spotted exiting the stolen van with a female companion.

Rees initially refused to exit his room when ordered to do so by police, leading to SWAT involvement.

Rees is charged with one count of robbery in connection with the theft of the woman's purse in the Kroger parking lot, while his possession of the van resulted in a charge of receiving stolen property.
