Mother Speaks Out to Coschocton Man Who Admitted to Killing Their Baby
COSHOCTON -- Jurors and family members listened in court Monday as a man pleaded guilty to killing his 8-week-old son.
A Coshocton County judge sentenced Corey Lafferty to 15 years to life in prison and ordered him to pay a $25,000 fine after the defendant admitted to the murder charge. The child-endangering charges were dropped as part of the plea deal.
The charges were in connection to the Sept 2013 death of Raven, who fought for his life for a few days in the hospital after sustaining multiple blunt injuries and swelling of the brain.
Lafferty initially said the injuries happened when Raven fell from a swing.
The boy's mother, Rachel Santos, was at work during the incident. She said the pain of losing her young son has haunted her.
"Do you know how hard it is to plan your child's funeral? To hold him six minutes and have him die in your hands?" Santos said Monday. "Corey, you took a big chunk of my heart out and stomped on it. This is something that [no] mother should have to go through."
Laura Mescee, Raven's grandmother, said the death haunts her.
"I handed him over to you," she said to Lafferty in court. "I have to live with that I handed him over to be killed."
Lafferty was also the father of a three-year-old daughter, Raven's sister.
