Fire Leaves Man Homeless in the Cold
EAST COLUMBUS (Ben Garbarek) -- A fire destroys a trailer, leaving a man without a home during one of the coldest nights of the year.
The fire broke out around 7 p.m. Wednesday evening off Anchor Drive West in East Columbus. The man that lives there said he was trying to light his water heater.
"When I go in the house right beside my furnace I see fire going up the wall," said Willie Mason. "I just ran out and called the fire department."
He made it out safely but his trailer is a total loss.
"I'm homeless," he said. "That's all I thought about is that I'm homeless."
Fortunately the American Red Cross is stepping in to help Mason. The Red Cross said there's a greater sense of urgency helping out other people when the weather is this frigid.
"You need a place to stay," said Dave Freeman of the Red Cross. "It's cold out. Even in a full jacket, they're going to be needing."
