Meals on Wheels Volunteers Brighten Holiday for Central Ohioans

COLUMBUS (Ben Garbarek) -- Approximately 200 people volunteered their time on Christmas to deliver hot meals to those in need.

The volunteers packed and delivered 800 meals to home-bound elderly people across Columbus for the Meals on Wheels organization.

We have a 4 year-old son, said volunteer Julia Towell.  We just really want to explain to him the real meaning of Christmas is this year.

Most of the people receiving the meals have medical conditions or other problems that force them to stay at home.

Just that little bit of time they spend with the older adult will really just brighten their day, said Michelle Jones of Lifecare Alliance.  (It lets) them know they are not forgotten on Christmas Day.

The volunteers told ABC 6/FOX 28 its not just the people receiving the meals that are helped by the program.

Its always a blessing to help other people, Towell said.  You think youre helping someone, and you end up feeling encouraged and helped yourself.

Meals on Wheels operators said the need for help doesnt end after Christmas.  Roughly 6000 meals are delivered every day to seniors across central Ohio.
