Dozens Displaced During La Rue Flood

LA RUE (Lu Ann Stoia) -- The first full day of winter walloped parts of central Ohio not with snow, but floods.

In Marion County, rising waters Sunday night and Monday morning forced families to evacuate.

The American Red Cross opened a shelter in the area. The organization said the flooding impacted about 150 families and expected more evacuees Monday night.

Heavy rain and melting snow caused rivers and streams to rise. More than two feet of water rose into apartments in Kiwanis retirement village.

Emergency workers rushed to help those at risk, using inflatable rescue boats to evacuate 31 residents.

The floodwaters impacted several parts of Marion County and experts predicted waters would continue to rise in other central Ohio communities.

Officials said another shelter may be set up in the Prospect area if necessary.
