Central Ohioans Prepare for Friday Storm

COLUMBUS (Terri Sullivan/Kate Liebers) -- In anticipation of the freezing rain and ice in Friday's forecast, Central Ohioans kept supply stores busy Thursday afternoon.

Scrapers, shovels and rock salt are among the best-selling items.

"My husband said to make sure we get stuff just in case," said Nicole Veitinger, a customer at Ace Hardware near Grandview Heights.

"We have a snow-blower already but no shovel, which doesn't make a lot of sense," she said. "We decided to stock up on that we got some salt yesterday."

Employee Jeff Lynn said he certainly doesn't mind the flurry of shoppers before the storm.

"(It's) good for business," he said. "I can't complain."

Experts warn against using rock salt to de-ice new concrete, blacktop or brick walkways or driveways. Because they are not actually cured for the first year, the salt can damage to such surfaces.

Instead, experts recommend using kitty litter for traction.
