Family of 5 Escapes Burning West Columbus Home

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- A man believes a malfunctioning heater kicked off a series of events that led to a fire at his family's West Side home.

Adan Servin, along with his wife and three children, safely escaped their burning Princeton Avenue home at approximately 6 a.m. Wednesday. They noticed the house was ablaze while they warmed themselves by their fireplace, according to Servin.

Firefighters arrived to find the roof in flames; they were able to extinguish the fire within two hours.

Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire, though Servin said he believes flames from his home's fireplace spread to the ceiling's insulation.

The family's reliance on the fireplace was made necessary by a malfunctioning heater, according to Servin, who said he spoke to a repair worker about the problem on Tuesday.

While the fire caused significant damage to the family's home and property, Servin said was focused on something more important while speaking with ABC 6/FOX 28.

"All the material stuff, clothes, furniture and stuff, who cares," he said. "The main thing is my family is okay."

The Servin family had lived in the home for just six months when the fire occurred.
