State Marshal to Investigate 2nd Morrow Co. Church Fire

MARENGO, Ohio (Ken Hines) -- State investigators are returning to Morrow County, where two churches have been destroyed by fire over a period of two weeks.

The state fire marshal will examine the remnants of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Marengo on Wednesday. The church burned to the ground Tuesday morning due to an unknown cause.

The loss of Gethsemane follows a Thanksgiving Day fire that destroyed Sacred Hearts Catholic Parish in Cardington -- Morrow County's only Catholic church.

The Gethsemane fire was first reported at approximately 11 a.m. Tuesday. Eight departments were ultimately required to bring the fire under control.

Pastor Donnie Hale learned about the fire from a friend, and soon arrived to find his church in flames.

"The only thing I can do in a situation like this is not speculate -- because it's not my area of expertise -- and trust God," Hale said. "He's sovereign in these matters, he's got a reason for it. We may never know the reason for it this side of glory. He's in control."

Investigators hope to find evidence of the cause of the fire during Wednesday's examination. The cause of the Sacred Hearts fire was not determined due to the extent of the damage done to the parish.

No injuries have been attributed to the fires.
