Police Beef up Security at Mall for Air Jordan Release

COLUMBUS (James Jackson) -- Mall mayhem, as crowds go crazy to grab a voucher so they can get the new Air Jordan shoes. You saw it first on ABC 6/FOX 28 last weekend. Tomorrow morning, the actual shoe goes on sale.

Hundreds of people running through the halls is still fresh in the minds of employees at Eastland Mall. Wesley Morrison, co-manager at Journey, hopes to get his hands on the popular shoe, with a voucher of his own. "Hopefully it should be a little bit more controlled rather than what it was last week where they're busting down doors," Morrison said.

120 vouchers will be cashed in for the sneakers Saturday and to keep control and Columbus police spokesman, Sergeant Rich Weiner, says they're working with retailers and mall staff. "Additional officers on the outer perimeter of the mall which will be patrolling on foot and in a car to make sure we don't have any robberies or thefts," Sergeant Weiner said.

Police say they're well-versed in crowd control and anticipate a group that's smaller than what they usually see. "We're used to putting together large field forces for football games, different events across the city. Red, White and Boom, the Jazz Rib Fest," Sergeant Weiner said.

Store managers at Eastland tell ABC 6/FOX 28 they're bringing in extra employees to deal with Michael Jordan's mania. Officers hope their presence will cause people to think twice, so last weekend's mayhem won't happen again.

Doors open there at 8 in the morning. ABC 6/FOX 28 also talked to representatives at Polaris. They say the shoe release there has been cancelled. They would not say why.
