Financial Issues Cause Kearney to Leave FitzGerald's Ticket

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- Ohio gubernatorial candidate Ed FitzGerald is looking for a new running mate after State Senator Eric Kearney announced he is removing himself from the ticket.

Kearney (D) decided to step down after the existence of hundreds-of-thousands of dollars in state and federal tax liens levied against the Senator, his wife, and business came to light in late November.

Additionally, Kearney recently reached a settlement with American Express after being sued by the company over a debt of more than $14,000 in 2012.

"Its undeniable that this has come to be a distraction from a discussion of the vital issues facing Ohio, and the choice voters must make in this election," Kearney said in a statement released to media outlets on Tuesday.

In the statement, Kearney said he will continue to serve in his role as Ohio's 9th District Senator.
