Grandview Guitar Theft Suspect Charged with Child Abuse

COLUMBUS (Lisa Rantala/Kate Liebers) -- Parents are facing charges after police found two children in Grandview deprived of heat and food.

Jennifer White and Corey Castle were charged with child endangerment after their 7- and 10-year-old children knocked on a neighbor's door for food.

"There was no heat, no refrigerator," neighbor Nicole Bishop said. "They were using the stove as heat."

Bishop said the children were left alone in the boarded up home instead of going to school.

"I know for a fact they were barricaded in their room hours upon hours," Bishop said. "I used to ask Jennifer why (she) didn't take them to school. She said they went to a different 'school.'"

The children said their parents told them to cover their eyes when the couple smoked crack cocaine, according to police.

Bishop said she tried calling Children Protective Services, but didn't get a response from authorities until Crime Stoppers asked for leads on another crime -- the high-profile theft of band equipment in Grandview.

"They started bringing in a whole bunch of stuff I knew they couldn't afford," Bishop said. "Like guitars, TVs, anything you can imagine."

Bishop called police when she found out White was wanted in connection to the guitar theft.

The couple faced a judge Tuesday for the child abuse charges; both were released.

Officers put the children into foster care after busting down the couple's door this week.
