Ohio Harvests More than 75,000 Deer During Gun Season

COLUMBUS -- Ohio hunters harvested 75,408 white-tailed deer during the seven-day gun hunting season, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources reported Monday.

The number of harvested deer is on the rise, according to ODNR. Hunters have killed 162,720 deer so far this year, compared to the 171,867 deer harvested at this time in 2012.

Keeping the deer population under control "maximizes recreational opportunities, while minimizing conflicts with landowners and motorists," ODNR stated in a release.

"Until recently, the populations in nearly all of Ohios counties were well above their target numbers. In the last few years, through increased harvests, dramatic strides have been made in many counties to bring those populations closer toward their goal," ODNR stated.

The ODNR also stated that "hunting is the best and most effective management tool for maintaining Ohios healthy deer population."

For the second consecutive year, Coshocton County reported the highest number of checked deer: 2,658 in 2013 and 3,119 in 2012. Other counties reporting the greatest harvests included Muskingum, with 2,604 deer; Tuscarawas, 2,604; Guernsey, 2,401; Ashtabula, 2,334; and Harrison, 2,133.

While the gun hunting season ended Sunday, the opportunities to shoot a deer are not over.

Archery season is to remain open until Feb. 2, 2014; the muzzleloader season is scheduled for Jan. 4-7, 2014.

ODNR encourages hunters to donate their deer to help the needy in their area. The division said it has been working with Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry to help pay for the processing of donated venison. Hunters who donate a deer to a food bank are not required to pay the processing cost as long as funding for the effort is available.

The following list is a total account of the number of white-tailed deer harvested during the week-long season in each county. The first number shows the 2013 figures while the 2012 figures are in parentheses:
