220 Area Code To Be Added to 740 Region in 2014
COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- Local phone numbers will soon take a little longer to dial for central Ohioans who currently use the 740 area code.
Officials with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) announced Wednesday that they will overlay a new area code, 220, into the 740 area in 2014. The region is expected to run out of available 740 numbers in 2015.
The overlay allows several current area residents to avoid the forced changes of their phone numbers to include the 220 code, but will eventually result in a requirement that area codes are included on all local calls made by the affected customers.
A survey of more than 900 telephone users in the area found that 70 percent of respondents preferred the overlay to the alteration of existing numbers, according to a PUCO news release.
"The Commission weighed the input received from the public and from the Ohio telecommunications industry, and has determined the overlay plan as the least disruptive and fair - treating all existing 740 customers equally by allowing current customers to retain the 740 area code on all existing lines," PUCO Chairman Todd A. Snitchler said.
The mandatory usage of area codes for local calls will begin on March 21, 2015 for anyone calling 740 or 220 phone numbers.
