Man Dies at Red Zone Bar, Days after City Leaders Voted to Reject Permit

COLUMBUS -- City Leaders said they voted to pull one bar's liquor license less than a week before a man was fatally shot at that establishment.

A 24-year-old patron at the Red Zone died Sunday morning after gunfire rang out on the dance floor.

The death happened a month after another man was shot at the same bar. He survived, but the incident still raised questions about the establishment's safety.

The bar has a reputation for violence, ranging from bar fights to shootings to assaults on police. Just this year, police have made more than 100 runs to this downtown bar, Assistant City Attorney Bill Sperlazza said.

"That's one of the most we've seen with liquor establishments in 2013," Sperlazza said. "It's obviously a climate that is dangerous."

Sperlazza presented his findings last week to Columbus City Council, the members of which agreed to ask the state to reject the bar's liquor permit.

A hearing regarding the permit could be held as early as February.

The gunshots from the recent fatality can be heard near the end of a video captured during a musical guest's performance. The YouTube video can be watched here:
