Mother Hopes Daughter's Story Will Deter Drunk Driving

COLUMBUS -- A mother who lost her only daughter pleaded with New Year's Eve partiers to not drink and drive.

Mary Hackworth said her daughter, Beth, was driving eastbound on Frank Road when a man traveling westbound went across traffic and slammed into Beth's car. She died instantly.

The driver was accused of being drunk.

"It is devastating," Hackworth said. "It changes so many lives."

On this New Year's Eve, Hackworth said she hopes her daughter's story will make people reconsider how they travel after celebrating.

Beth was a preschool teacher who left behind a 7-year-old daughter, Briaunna.

Statistically, this holiday is the most dangerous time of the year for drivers.
