Police Search for Lottery Scam Repeat Offender

WEST COLUMBUS (Tom Bosco/Kate Liebers) -- A man known for scamming clerks out of lottery tickets is apparently making the rounds again.

The Ohio State Lottery reported that someone has been stealing $20 instant tickets from the Thornton's gas station in West Columbus as well as others throughout Central Ohio.

Surveillance video shows the suspect piling a lot of items on the counter before asking for lottery tickets. When the clerk isn't watching, he swipes the lottery tickets and flees.

"He'll be out the door and headed to the nearest lottery retailer to cash any winning tickets he might have," said Dave Pollock, Ohio Lottery commission investigator.

Officials reported that they know the suspect: Robert Cabot. This man has apparently pulled the same stunt at least 100 times since 2006.

Because he is only charged with petty theft, he does not spend a lot of time behind bars.

The lottery alerted clerks about the rip-off in October, but the warnings don't seem to be working. The aforementioned surveillance video, for example, was filmed just a month after the warning was released.
