10-Year-Old Boy in Critical Condition After East Columbus Shooting
COLUMBUS (Ken Hines/Kate Liebers) -- Family members of the 10-year-old shooting victim said the boy was accidentally shot after his brother found a gun in an alley.
"His brother found a gun in the alley and thought it would be cool to play with it," said Jovonne Jenkins, the boy's aunt.
Jenkins said Ivyiontae Stevens was accidentally around 1:11 a.m. Monday at 953 Studer Ave. in East Columbus.
"It hit the right side of his brain and shattered the skull," said Marcia Banks, the boy's grandmother.
The victim was rushed to Nationwide Children's Hospital, where he remained in critical condition Monday evening. The boy's family said he is a model student at Easthaven Elementary School.
Police have not confirmed the family's version of events, and have not publicly identified the victim.
