New OSU Prez Tours Campus on Friday
COLUMBUS (Ken Hines/Kate Liebers) -- Ohio State University's new president spent Friday afternoon touring the campus and meeting the students he will soon lead.
Dr. Michael Drake and his wife Brenda received a warm Buckeye welcome as students crowded the Ohio Union. Some students presented the new president with a plaque of buckeyes, known as the state's good luck charms.
Freshman student Starr Prater said she skipped class to meet the university's new leader.
"To be able to see not only a black president in the White House, but also at my own college, is really encouraging," she said.
Drake was expected to spend some time at the Wexner Center for the Arts Friday evening, followed by a tour of the OSU Medical Center on Saturday.
The university's Board of Trustees announced the hiring of Drake as the school's new president on Thursday afternoon.
Drake, 64, is coming to OSU from the University of California, Irvine, where he has served as chancellor since 2005.
