Ohio Statehouse Garage Closes Due to Cold
COLUMBUS (Christ Vanocur) -- It was so cold Monday, even some of the doors to the People's House were closed.
One of the main parking entrances to the Ohio Statehouse was shut down Monday because of the below freezing temperatures.
Officials worried that the exposed pipes at the Broad Street parking entrance could burst.
If the cold wind -- the one that could be felt even with the parking garage door shut -- were to freeze and crack the pipes, hundreds of gallons of water could gust out.
"The real concern is the property of the citizens of the state of Ohio," said Luke Stedke, of the Capitol Square Advisory Board. "They've made a big investment in our facilities. We want to make sure we're protecting that."
Not only could the gushing water flood all three levels of parking, but it might also short the extensive electric system and cause a fire.
Consequently, officials decided to keep the entrance closed until Wednesday.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as my grandmother said," Stedke said.
