Father Temporarily Released From Jail to Attend Son's Funeral
POWELL (Adam Slinger) - - A judge allowed a father to leave jail for four hours Thursday night to attend his sons funeral.
Natividad Hernandez, 30, a suspected illegal immigrant, is accused of leaving the scene of an accident shortly after his four-year-old son, Angel, fell out of a van and died. Investigators said the father was leaving a construction site, where he planned to steal scrap materials.
Hernandez did not have a police escort to the Rutherford Funeral home in Powell, but was, instead, released into the custody of his attorney, Scott Culbert.
He's not doing very well, Culbert said shortly after arriving at the funeral.
Culbert admitted that he did not expect the judge to allow Hernandez to be temporarily released.
With a $500,000 bond, a death and an ice holdfor a judge to sign off on a furlough, I was surprised, he said.
Dozens of people showed up to the funeral that was conducted in Spanish, but translated into English.
Angels family in Honduras is hoping to raise enough money to bring the boys body to that country to be buried.
