Mansfield Animal Shelter Fire Proves Fatal for a Few Cats

MANSFIELD, Ohio (AP/Kate Liebers) -- An animal shelter in north-central Ohio broke out in flames Friday night, proving fatal for three cats, officials said.

Officials said at least 50 cats were kept at the Stop The Overpopulation of Pets shelter, located at 1152 Lexington Ave. Crews reportedly pulled about 35 cats out of the home, and community members have volunteered to look after many of them.

Dispatcher Mark Huckleberry said the fire was under control within minutes of crews' arrival.

Huckleberry says a shelter employee called authorities just before 6:30 p.m. Friday to report the fire in the basement.
