Woman Dies in Delaware Co. Trailer Fire

DELAWARE COUNTY (Ben Garbarek/Kate Liebers) -- A woman in her 60s died in a house fire Thursday,  according to the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.

Emergency crews responded to the trailer fire around 2:30 p.m. Thursday at 11050 Fancher Rd. in Harlem Township. A neighbor who had befriended the woman reportedly tried to save her, but arrived too late.

Brett Ford said he checked in on the woman often.

"We kind of adopted her under our wing -- going over, checking her out, helping her out with whatever she needs," Ford said.

When he came home Thursday, all he saw was smoke.

"There were no visible flames," Ford said. "It was just so engulfed in smoke you couldn't see anything."

He said he tried to bust open the door, but the smoke was too overwhelming.

"I could tell the smoke rolled out the bottom at the crack of the door and there was no getting in," he said.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire. DCSO's Jeff Bessinger said most of the damage is by the front door and the front two rooms.

"Unfortunately, she was in one of those rooms," Bessinger said.

Investigators said they would return to the scene Friday morning to find clues as to what started the fire.

No one else was reported injured.

Investigators are still determining how the fire started.
