Columbus Officer Honored For Stopping Armed Robber

COLUMBUS -- A Columbus officer was honored for his bravery during an armed robbery last June.

Officer Sam Rippey, an 8-year veteran of the Columbus Police Department, was wrapping up his shift when he heard a gunshot at a Dollar General in North Columbus.

"I couldn't believe what I was seeing," Rippey said.

Investigators said Santel Hughes ran out of the store wearing a ski mask and holding a shotgun. Rippey jumped out of his cruiser and ran after him.

Hughes, refusing to stop, allegedly pointed the gun at Rippey.

"You have a lot of things rushing through your mind but...the training just kind of takes over and it's just more of a reactionary thing than anything else," Rippey said.

Rippey reportedly shot at Hughes, ending the confrontation.

The officer was recognized Wednesday morning for his actions.

Hughes has since pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated robbery. He is due back in court in March.
