Frigid Temperatures Cooling Off Sales for Businesses
GAHANNA (Ben Garbarek) -- The frigid temperatures are taking a toll on many local businesses. Many people are opting to stay warm at home rather than go out to eat or shop.
"Trying to make people come out in this bad weather is a real challenge," said Jimmy Staravcka, the owner of Gahanna Grill. "As a restaurant owner, all we can do is make sure to get plenty of specials like hot soups and stuff and keep it going. Other than that there's nothing you can do."
Staravcka has been serving up burgers at Gahanna Grill for ten years. He said this has been the slowest and toughest stretch for his business ever.
"I wonder what the other owners do at the restaurants that are not as busy," he said.
It's not like the cold is a one or two day problem. The temperatures have barely gone above freezing in several weeks. That means night after night of fewer customers.
"Hopefully better days are ahead of us," Staravcka said.
Staravcka said weekend evenings still see a healthy number of regular customers, but sales during slower nights, like during the work week, are particularly painful.
