Police Arrest Suspected Serial Bank Robber in Franklinton

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines/Kate Liebers) -- A man suspected of robbing nine banks in central and southwestern Ohio was arrested Friday night in Franklinton.

Grove City police took Michael Hay into custody at 56 Rogers Ave. in connection with a Feb. 1 robbery at Key Bank on Hoover Road.

Investigators have since linked Hay to two additional bank robberies in the Columbus area, as well as five similar crimes in the Dayton and Cincinnati areas.

The Cincinnati police said Hay had a pattern of taking his wallet out of his right rear pocket and unfold it to expose a note to the teller. Officers said that he eventually became so bold, he stopped wearing a mask.

"He's not afraid or he doesn't care," said Mark Peters of the Cincinnati Police Department. "By the time you get to doing one a week or more than one a week, you get to be like, 'Hey, honey. I'm going to work today.'"

Investigators believe Hay began his latest crime spree after he was released from prison in 2013 following a three year sentence for another bank robbery.

Investigators identified Hay as the robber with the help of tips submitted by the public to Crime Stoppers, according to Grove City police.
