Firefighters Recovering After Truck Crashes

LANCASTER (James Jackson) -- Three firefighters are recovering tonight, after their truck crashed into a utility pole. It happened on Coonpath Road Northeast and Old Millersport Road, in Lancaster, around 8:30 Sunday morning.

The very people who run to emergencies found themselves in one. The Pleasant Township firefighters and paramedics were responding to a car accident, when their truck lost control on the slippery road. Acting Chief Andrew Fey was at home when he heard about the accident. He immediately rushed to help. "I saw two firefighters laying on the ground. One was face-down. The apparatus was completely destroyed," Chief Fey said.

Chad Mathias, Ryan Lytle and Corey Richards were hurt in the crash. Without hesitating, Chief Fey went to help Richards. "Make sure his neck was in tacked and in line with his spine. There were no big step-offs with his spine," Chief Fey said.

Chief Fey says his firefighter was bruised up pretty bad, so he moved him to safety. "As we were assessing him laying on the pavement, we started getting some blankets on him," Chief Fey said.

The firefighters are in stable condition. One of them was treated and went home. The other two are recovering at Grant Medical Center in Downtown Columbus. Chief Fey says it will be at least a week before they return to work.
