The Franklin County Children Services were alerted of a mailing error, were letters containing incorrect personal information of some children were mailed to foster parents and caregivers last week.

FCCS said in a statement, "under certain circumstances, the IRS allows “foster children” to be counted as dependents by the current caregiver. Therefore, the agency provides the necessary social security numbers to caregivers for their tax preparation every year. Due to an error in the system, there was a mix up in the child's details and the caregiver's name and address."

The agency is asking foster parents and caregivers to destroy the letter.

Parents and guardians of the children are being contacted by FCCS to inform them of the mistake.

The agency is buying credit monitoring and identity theft protection for each child.
