Pickaway County police chase ends in Franklin County
A pursuit with a reported armed suspect that started in Pickaway County ended with a crash in Franklin County Monday afternoon.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office says it started early Monday when the suspect carjacked a vehicle and stole an AR-15 from a home in South Bloomfield. A few hours later, he stole a second vehicle in another location in Pickaway County.
The Pickaway County Sheriff's Office asked Franklin County to help assist with the pursuit when the suspect drove past US 33 and Gender Road. The suspect then crashed into another vehicle outside of a gas station near the intersection of Parsons and Dering Avenues.
Chief Jim Gilbert with The Franklin County Sheriff's Office said the suspect fled on foot and ran towards a home near the gas station. Gilbert said the suspect aggressively started knocking on the door and tried to break in. A few minutes later, police held him at gunpoint.
"We know as we're chasing the vehicle he could fire shots from the vehicle. It's a very dangerous situation that rose to the level of where it was very important for us to successfully take him into custody," said Gilbert.
Police believe the suspect was under the influence of a narcotic. He is now in custody in Pickaway County.
