Police officer hospitalized after patting-down accused shoplifter at grocery store

    A police officer was hospitalized after he patted down an alleged shoplifter at a south Columbus grocery store.

    Columbus Police said Officer Rodney Mayberry was working special duty at the Kroger on Parsons Avenue Tuesday when he noticed a shoplifter. After patting down the woman accused of shoplifting, he began to feel ill.

    Medics arrived around 9:30 p.m. and took Mayberry to the hospital. The medics said there was no sign of opiate exposure.

    He was released Wednesday morning. Columbus Police said doctors couldn't identify the substance he was exposed to, and there was no trace of any foreign substance in his blood.

    The woman accused of shoplifting had yet to be charged.
