CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- Tonya Howard says 44-year-old Amy Diehl was more than a life-long friend. Now, she's trying to cope with the death of a mother of two.

"She was my soul sister for 29 years, and nobody can replace that," Howard said Wednesday night.

The Pickaway County Sheriff's office said Diehl died Friday night after a fatal gunshot wound.

According to records, 44-year-old James McVey was later arrested on weapons charges and was placed in the Pickaway County Jail.

Co-workers said Diehl was a dedicated oncology nurse at the Adena Medical Center in Chillicothe for the past five years.

"A lot of her patients said how she's helped them through so much, but that's just how she she is. She loved to help people."

McVey's son said his father had been dating Diehl for seven months and was living in her home. He added Diehl was more like a mother figure and had expressed safety concerns in the past.

He said his father called him late Friday night and said Diehl shot herself.

"I believe in my heart Amy didn't do this to herself, unfortunately, I believe that my father did it," McVey said.

Investigators at the Pickaway County Sheriff and prosecutor's office said that the case remained under investigation pending autopsy results.

"It's a nightmare, and I can't even explain it," Howard added.
