Spirit Airlines announces expansion to Columbus
Spirit Airlines is coming to John Glenn Columbus International Airport, bringing daily and seasonal non-stop flights to seven U.S. cities.
The news is exciting for passengers who have flown Spirit before. "All my experiences have been nice, so I don't have anything negative to say about it," says traveler Darrell Harris.
It’s also good news for travelers looking to try out the airline known for its budget friendly bare fares. “iI it's cheaper because we don't get peanuts on the flight that' s fine with me," says Christine Buck, who’s never flown with Spirit before.
The airline said non-stop flights will be offered to several cities in the southeast and Las Vegas out west.
Airport president and CEO Elaine Roberts says Spirit's decision to enter the Columbus market comes as no surprise. "Our population is growing as a region. Our economy is strong. We're a large college town with a lot of university students and those are the kind of things they look at when they make a decision on markets."
This latest announcement will bring competitive fares and more options to Central Ohio. “This town is getting a lot bigger and a lot more cool stuff coming here. Having another airline, because you have Delta and Southwest here, and you have another option. That's always good," says Thomas Coburn.
Spirit will begin rolling out service starting in February, 2018. Flights will be offered to:
- Fort Lauderdale, Florida
- Fort Myers, Florida
- Las Vegas, Nevada
- Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
- New Orleans, Louisiana
- Orlando, Florida
- Tampa, Florida
