2 police officers killed after shooting in Westerville

    Two Central Ohio police officers were killed in the line of duty Saturday morning.

    According to police, a call came into Westerville Emergency Dispatch 911 center as a hang-up. When officers responded to Cross Wind Drive shots were fired at officers.

    Authorities have identified the two officers killed as Anthony Morelli and Eric Joering.

    The Westerville City Manager said Eric Joering, 39, spent 17 years on the force. They also added Anthony Morelli, 54, had 30 years with Westerville police.

    Westerville police said one of the officers died at the scene and the other officer died the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.

    The suspect was wounded and also transported to an area hospital. Authorities are withholding the suspect's name.

    A procession of First Responders lined up to escort the bodies of two Westerville police officers.

    On Monday, the Department of Justice announced more charges related to the murders.

    Federal authorities said Gerald Lawson, of Warrensville Heights, Ohio, was charged with aiding and abetting the possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
