Vietnam War veteran Thomas Powers only has one photo of his best friend, Michael Turner.

"There is not a day that goes by (that) I don't think about Mike," said Powers.

Powers said his friend was killed serving in the Vietnam War.

Powers, who is from the Linden area and lives there to this day, also has a place he can honor his friend, at a memorial nearby.

But Powers said he and his wife made a terrible discovery,

"We happened to drive by that and I told my wife, I said, 'Look, honey, the wall is broken down'," he said.

Now, where Cleveland Avenue and Westerville Road split, the war memorial is damaged.

"First, I thought well maybe it was vandals (who) knocked it down," said Powers, "and then, you know, glancing at it, it looked like a car may have hit it."

On it, an honor to those from Linden who made the supreme sacrifice over the decades, answering the call to serve in World War I, the Vietnam War, the Korean War and more.

It's a sight that broke the veteran's heart. The portion that honors his friend was toppled.

"Just seeing that, just you know, just hurt," he said.

Surrounded by two of his grandchildren, the Purple Heart recipient told ABC6/FOX28, he wasn't exactly sure what to do.

"I talked to my wife about it and she said, 'You've got to call 6 On Your Side'," he said.

His hope is that the memorial will be restored.

Powers said he only reported this to ABC6/FOX28 because he wasn't sure who else to contact.

The Franklin County Auditor's website indicates the space belongs to the city.

The city is looking into this, saying it is important to them to honor those who served, and they want to find out exactly what happened and what it will take to repair this.

ABC6/FOX28 reached out to Columbus Police and looked through police reports, not finding any reports indicating what could have happened there for the past few months.

ABC6/FOX28 is still investigating and is speaking with neighborhood leaders about the situation.
