Mysterious room discovered after floor collapses in Idaho family's home
It was 4 a.m. in Idaho Falls last week when Brittany Bush and her husband woke up to a loud crashing noise that left them puzzled. It wasn't until later in the day, Brittany discovered something that left her speechless.
"My husband was inside the house with our 18-month-old son and I went out to the garage to grab some storage totes to put away our Christmas decorations. As I was pulling up the garage door I started stepping in and my foot just kept going down. Luckily I was still gripping the garage door and looked down and was completely shocked and confused at what I was looking at," Brittany said.
Brittany saw her garage floor caved in... but what was inside, was most shocking.
"I just started screaming for my husband and he came out of the house wondering what was going on," said Brittany.
They shined some flashlights in the garage and noticed shelving with children's toys, women's curlers, and some papers underneath the crumbled concrete floor.
Their home was built in 1978 and they bought it in the summer of 2015.
The family began cleaning out the garage on Wednesday. Due to the extensive damages and dangerous situation, they went through a clean-up company.
They have pulled out a child's stuffed ducky toy, a stuffed snowman, a beer bottle dated 1999, an envelope dated 2005 with a woman's name and out-of-state address that was empty, a Melaleuca catalog, and lots of garbage.
"So far we don't see any signs of foul play and think it might have been an old storage room that someone closed up before selling," Brittany said.
Brittany's insurance company came to inspect the damage later that week with an engineer. Ultimately, it was the weight of their items that made the two-inch-thick cement floor crumble. They had a snowblower, lawn equipment, storage totes in the garage.
The engineer said he was shocked the floor hadn't caved in sooner.
"I just think how many times we have been in there with our 18-month-old and I feel so blessed that this didn't happen while anyone was in there," Brittany said.
Brittany says that their garage is narrow so they never parked their car inside. She says this is a "blessing in disguise."
The Bush family doesn't know what they will do with the room yet, but that decision will take place once the clean-up is done.
