Ron Greenbaum, better known as "The Basement Doctor," has always loved a little rock and roll. But in 2020, he is taking it to a whole new level! In his ongoing effort to support Special Olympics Ohio, Ron and other members of the community will dress up as their favorite rock stars for the Columbus Polar Plunge at EXPRESS Live! This year's event takes place on Saturday, Feb. 8.
The event, presented by The Basement Doctor, benefits the 22,000 Special Olympics athletes in the state of Ohio. Participants raise money to earn the privilege of jumping right off the EXPRESS Live! stage and into the frigid waters of the Polar Plunge Dumpster, provided by Frog Hauling. The sanitized and lined dumpster will be set up in the "pit" area of the amphitheater's outdoor performance space. Immediately after an individual or group takes the plunge, they are escorted indoors to a warm dressing room so that they can kick the chill and return to watch the festivities.
"Each year the Columbus Polar Plunge gets bigger and better! We are especially grateful to The Basement Doctor for his ongoing support and dedication to this event and to the athletes of Special Olympics Ohio," said Jessica Stewart, Chief Executive Officer of Special Olympics Ohio. "Also, you can rest assured that the new Polar Plunge Dumpster will serve as the perfect replacement to last year's broken swimming pool! We are looking forward to a wonderful day of fun on Feb. 8 to support our athletes and our mission of inclusion."
"Giving back is the core of what The Basement Doctor and our company is all about. We want to provide for the people and institutions that need it most," said Ron Greenbaum. "When we become involved with an organization, we not only contribute monetarily, but we also leverage our assets to help generate awareness and encourage participation in fundraising events. The Basement Doctor Cares! Volunteer Program allows our employees to donate their time to causes that are important or personal to them and the company."
From the Beatles to Poison to Aerosmith, participants are encouraged to dress like their favorite rock star or rock group for the annual costume contest. Prizes are awarded for creativity and overall rock-and-roll presence. And if that doesn't rock your world, how about the opportunity to "Toss Your Boss"? For the first time this year, individuals and teams can nominate their boss for a dip in the dumpster. If he or she wants to support but not jump, they can match the nominee's donation.
Anyone afraid to jump into the icy water is invited to register as "Too Chicken to Plunge." Chickens are awarded a T-shirt and official permission to NOT Plunge, so regardless of your views on the cold, everyone is welcome to take part in this exciting and important charity event.
In 2019, the Columbus Polar Plunge attracted nearly 500 participants and raised over $100,000 in support of Special Olympics Ohio.
The Columbus Polar Plunge is a family-friendly event. Spectators are welcome to come and witness all the fun for free. Plans are in place for on-site booths and activities for all to enjoy. Columbus Plungefest at Express Live! will be happening throughout the Columbus Polar Plunge event, too. This is located in the amphitheater area, and it's your chance to meet and snap a selfie with members of the ABC 6, Fox 28, and CW Columbus teams!
