12th ranked Ohio Wesleyan knocks off rival Denison in 100th meeting in series
GRANVILLE, OH -- Junior attacker Steven Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) chalked up 3 goals and an assist during the first quarter as 12th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan moved to a 6-1 lead, and the Bishops went on to defeat sixth-ranked Denison, 13-8 in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Sunday in Granville.
The meeting was the 100th between the teams. The series dates back to Ohio Wesleyan's first season of varsity status in 1958.
Hildebrand found freshman attacker Will Anton (Madison, N.J.) for a goal just over 2 minutes into the contest, then scored a goal just 49 seconds later for a 2-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
Denison responded with a goal by Spencer Butler at the 10:01 mark of the period, but the Bishops scored the final 4 goals of the quarter, getting one from freshman midfielder Sean Gellen (Davis, Calif./Senior), a pair from Hildebrand, and one by sophomore midfielder Lucas Smith (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) with :47 to play in the period.
Senior midfielder Peter Hamblett (Portsmouth, N.H.) opened the second-quarter scoring with a goal to extend the margin to 7-1 with 10:59 left in the half.
The Big Red outscored the Bishops, 4-1, during the remainder of the period, with Butler scoring 3 of those goals. The last goal brought the hosts within 8-5 with :24 to play in the quarter.
Junior attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) scored during the first minute of the third quarter, courtesy of a Hildebrand feed, and Tennant and senior midfielder Luke Leyden (Northfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon) followed with goals, both assisted by junior midfielder Cole Jamieson (Okemos, Mich.), for an 11-6 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
Brooks Davy scored with :05 left in the third quarter to bring Denison within 11-7, but Leyden rang up a pair of fourth-quarter goals and senior goalkeeper Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) stopped 6 shots in the fourth quarter to help the Bishops preserve the lead.
Hildebrand led the Bishops with 3 goals and 2 assists, while Leyden finished with 3 goals. Senior Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) recorded 11 saves, and sophomore Joey Sichenzia (Sayville, N.Y.) had 2 saves during the third quarter.
Butler scored 4 goals for Denison. Coyle Poyfair and Steven Paras combined for 5 saves in the Big Red goal.
