B1G Tourney: Ohio State women defeat Maryland 79-69, win tournament
The regular season Big Ten Champions are now the Big Ten Tournament Champions.
Ohio State Women's Basketball defeated Maryland on Sunday 79-69.
Conference player of the year Kelsey Mitchell led the team with 25 points, 1 assist and 5 rebounds.
Mitchell was named 2018 Tournament Most Outstanding Player and to the all-tournament team.
Ohio State coach Kevin McGuff was very proud of his team. In the postgame interview McGuff said:
This was really special. We have five seniors who have really worked hard. For them to win this championship, it's really special. I'm really proud of our team because this is a great conference.
Ohio State Forward Stephanie Mavunga also made the all-tournament team.
Mavunga had a double-double in the semifinal win against Minnesota, putting up 26 points and 21 rebounds.
The Buckeyes have now won 11 straight games against Big Ten Conference opponents, a streak that includes both regular season and conference tournament games. Sunday's title is the Buckeyes' first Big Ten Tournament title since 2011.
Ohio State will wait to hear their name called on Selection Monday, which this year falls on March 12. It's likely that the Buckeyes will have a few tournament games at home. The NCAA Women's Final Four is in Columbus this year and will be held on March 30 and April 1 in Nationwide Arena.
